is it a good camera?

Lol... I know that feeling oh so well! Looks like a good one.
Good luck with the dissertation... take yourself somewhere where lots of other people are working, that's the only way I could do it :-)

Looks like a 2c or maybe a late 2b :-)
You are going to love this camera. The ZCG voted this one as one of the best user rangefinders around. And it looks damn good. Check for pinholes in the shuttercurtains and if the shutter works properly and off you go :-)
I think I got 5 or 6 of these.... so many variations.....

Hey Tom, I think my main concern is to establish what the 'true' shutter speeds are. Any tips on finding that out? I doubt if the 1/500 is anything as fast as that after all these years!
I bought this one mainly for hte collapsable industar 22 which usually goes for the same amount that I paid for this whole 'kit'

Don't I know the feeling...No worries, you 'll have many a happy snap with this. Here's a non-scientific tip I read somewhere (I think Karen Nakamura's website) on measuring speeds: if you say out loud 'one-one-hundred' then that corresponds to one second. Perhaps you can devise a similar test for 1/2 sec. Enjoy your new-old camera!

I've been watching fed-2s on ebay for a wee while and have so far resisted.

Oh no you won't, just think of all the pics you will be taking with it! Retail therapy of this kind always helps

dissertations are only for a degree, but addictions are for a lifetime. :-)

Haha you guys are really good at making me feel better! I have too many cameras!! Alas I would have prefered a Fed 2A with the cyrillic inscription on the top but they all looked too scruffy.

as with telling the time, mobile phones these days do an adequate job of what used to be a technological marvel.
I think there's a lot to be said for buying cameras just because they're beautiful.

You mean using the stop watch function? I don't know if I can press the buttons fast enough to accurately record 1/500s but I will give it a try anyway! thanks! :)

You can never have too many cameras. Or aesthetically pleasing objects you don't need, for that matter

HAH!!
nice one!

Thanks guys, I feel a little better too...

I had one of these in the 60s. I think all the fits, clearances and tolerances must have leaned in the right direction because it took shots like you'd never believe. Sold it for a secondhand Leica III with f3.5 Elmar.
