Wow.... an original Pre war Contax... WITH the original universal finder....

This later became the Kiev (2 3 4 ect...)and they even copied the finder.

I wonder what plane is behind him...

Dmitry (right spelling) Baltermants died in 1990. His probably most famous photograph is this:

which is seen among of the most significant photographs of the XX century. He left magnificent legacy in photojournalism. Being on of the "official" Soviet photographers helped him to immortalize some significant moments of modern history. Here you can see some of his work.

Wow thanks for all the extra info Mutbka! :)

Hmmm can't seem to be able to view that above image. What was the title?

It is called "The Grief". From the series “That's how it was...”. It was near southern Russian town of Kerch where nazi troops slaughtered more than 100,000 people.

Actually found that image in the book... some of the most traumatic scenes of war. Balermants calls them his only 'proper' pictures from his entire career. Must have affected him quite a lot...

That's not the standard Sonnar lens is it? Looks more like a 90mm.

KF 红相机
Def not the Sonnar. That would also explain that funky turret finder he's got mounted :)

from the turret of the plane I guess it is a Sukhoi SU-2 light bomber/scout.

Dmitrij Baltermants, received a Contax-II taken from the peronal belongings of Field Marshal v. Paulus, immediately after the surrender of the VI Army. The camera, taken by an Artillery Lieutenant was then presented to him.
I've seen that Contax in the early 80s, shown to me by Baltermants himself and he was very proud of it, of course.
