Nice DoF and light.

shoot wide open all the time and focus on near objects. the dof is thiner than if you focus a futher on. i tend to shoot things that are just over min focusing distance from the lens. helps to throw the background out of focus *hard*!

Very nice- I like the thin slice of focus. When I try and do this it always ends up overexposed. Have you tried 'magnifying glass macros'?

you mean those glass diopter filters? yeah i have but i don't like them all that much. putting a £2 piece of glass in front of a £100 lens doesn't sit well with me :-/ the optical quality is really quite poor.
how come you get overexposed pics? what setup are you using? i get this only when i mount manual lenses on my DSLR. something to do with the light that's let in confusing the cropped mirror and hence the meter. functions fine when stopped down. hmmm weird

I've got too many cheap cameras that don't go faster than 1/250 s- which is fine in sunny weather for f16 but not for f4! What I really need is an SLR with light meter and speeds up to 1/1000 s. (Heads off to ebay).
As for magnifying glass macros- I've never tried using macro lenses, but a magnifying glass gives a surreally narroe depth of feld of about a cm. Still- you're right the results are pretty lo-fi.

arrr i see you mean *literally* putting a magnifying glass in front of a lens! haha you see that sounds like fun! i just don't like the so called 'specialist' lenses they sell for lots of money and are crap :)
hehe and yes, i see how a top speed of 1/250 can give you trouble! i suppose you can try and get some *really* slow film?? once saw some ebay seller selling 7asa soviet era b&w film!!

7 ASA- sounds like photographic paper. That's something I must try- setting up a darkroom and putting paper in some of my cameras.
I've just had a look at my FED 2- that goes up to 1/500 s- I don't know why I haven't used it more. I've been seduced by those little toy cameras.

really really really want a nikkor 1.2! with a top speed of 1/4000 on the FE2 I can shoot as wide as i like! all the time :)
