I agree with you both and made that comment to my other half at the time, but what it reminded me more of was the 'Britains not working' campaign by the Conservatives back in the seventies.

It's amazing that people will so willingly queue for hours for the tower when you can get excellent views from the top of tour Montparnasse and le Grande Arche.

Or even a free walk up the steps of the Sacre Coeur.

I think it sums up the lengths (excuse the pun) that people will go to to stand on one of the worlds most famous monuments. And to think there were three of these queues.
